There has been an increase of fraudulent CPFCU official checks being presented for payment from various sources. Be very cautious if you receive an unexpected official check from CPFCU and contact the Call Center at 312-726-8814 option 1 to verify the validity of the issued check.
Fiserv has informed CPFCU that cardholders received text alerts from two phone numbers, 844-334-1116 and 844-325-8295. The text stated (Credit Union Alert - call 901-290-0593) The phone number given in the text alert directs the caller to an automated system that asks for the cardholders 16 digit card number. This is a SCAM as CPFCU will NEVER ask for personal information in this manner.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Sept. 6, 2016) – The National Credit Union Administration has received additional consumer calls about suspicious text messages claiming to come from the agency.
The messages read: “National Credit Union Administration Alert for (recipient's phone number). Contact 844-234-5445.” Other fraudulent phone numbers to be alert for are 855-340-1398 and 844-906-0773.
These texts are not communications from NCUA. The agency does not seek personal information through the internet or on the telephone.
Please contact NCUA's Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-755-1030 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern if you receive one of these messages. NCUA also recommends contacting your credit union and local law enforcement as well.
You may also contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center.
NCUA operates an online Fraud Prevention Center that offers information about avoiding frauds and scams on its MyCreditUnion.gov website.
If you suspect you may have become a victim of identity theft because of this scam, you should immediately contact the three major credit bureaus and request a fraud alert be placed on your credit report: Equifax (888-766-0008), Experian (888-397-3742), and TransUnion (800-680-7289).

The scam: Instead of sending you a phishing email, scammers send you a cell phone text message, supposedly from your bank, asking you to visit a website whose address looks genuine. It isn’t, and once keyed in, takes you to a bogus site that asks for personal details so the bank can “unlock” or “verify” your account. Currently making the rounds in Columbia, MO.
Solution: As with phishing emails, never follow a link, even one you have to manually key in, that you don’t know for sure. And never provide confidential information unless you know the site is secure — with an “s” in the “https” part of the address line and/or a padlock icon in the message area of your browser.

Unfortunately, merchants and retailers aren’t subject to these federal requirements. Many of them follow their own data security standards, but the recent rash of data breaches shows that much more needs to be done. When it comes to protecting your personal information, every measure counts.
When your debit or credit card data is breached at a retailer, the cost of card replacement or account reimbursement to you is paid by your credit union, not by the merchant where the breach occurred.
We want you to know that in the event of any breach affecting your accounts, your credit union will always do what we can to make you whole. In the meantime, credit unions around the country are leading the effort to get Congress to pass legislation ensuring merchants and retailers meet a national standard for protecting any of your financial data they collect when you make a purchase.
